Loudness War? Compare the Dynamics of Releases

I recently ran across this very useful website that aggregates information on the dynamics of various album releases as submitted by users. It’s called The (unofficial) Dynamic Range Database. What I find most fascinating is using it to compare the original mixes of older material with the ‘remastered’ material being released decades later. Sometimes they do it right – sometimes they don’t. More often than not they don’t.

Anyway – a fascinating resource to be sure.

I can’t see how the loudness wars can ever be won. better limiters is all I can think of, but still limiting = less dynamics, so better limiters isn’t actually a solution.

It’s a sad state of affairs but if we want to compete we need to follow.
