Eric uses all bands of his UnderToneAudio EQ to achieve an incredible, musical Motown sound with just one mic.

This is the stuff that separates the men from the boys, folks.  Ace work, Eric!

I’m looking for a technical explanation. What is the real difference between the stock compressor in pro tools and something like a disstressor or other piece of quality outboard gear? Can these pieces of gear be mimicked with the proper settings?

  2. Dan Connor says:

Hey Daniel. Digital tools are getting better at emulating analog tools with every passing year. So, yeah, it’s largely possible to mimic the sound of outboard gear in plugins these days. The bottom line is a built-in compressor like the Pro Tools compressor is going to try to be all things for everyone – so it’ll sound more generic. A Distressor has a very particular sound that wouldn’t be appropriate for a “general purpose” compressor like the stock ones that ship with Pro Tools.
