Totally agree on wall coupling. It's a huge difference.

Thanks for reading. Yes, I put so much effort into the posts that I couldn't keep up with the one-post-a-day regimen :)

I really enjoy writing. Is your website for a school somewhere?

Good stuff! Another relevant thought here related to subwoofer placement is considering proximity to walls. Placing the subwoofer up against a wall will produce coupling that increases the apparent efficiency (and therefore perceived volume) of the subwoofer, and placing it in a corner intensifies the effect even more. Just a few inches here or there can make a dramatic difference.

Bryan -

I generally agree with you. Most pro monitors are sufficient in the bass department to get good mixes. It comes down to how well you know your monitors - a lot of NS10 users don't 'hear' the bass but instead have gotten to know the way the cone moves when it's right.

Ideally the sub should just sound like your monitors but with more low-end extension. I get annoyed with systems where it sounds like a third wheel.

If you can't notice the sub doing its thing, and its this difficult to setup, it seems to me that they probably aren't a very cost effective means to improving your mixes. maybe that's just me though
